Make Useful Things For Your Home With A Sheet Metal Brake

There are many things you can make with metalworking tools like a sheet metal brake, a drill press and such. Shaping sheet metal can be a bit difficult without the right tools, but when you do have them, a whole world of possibilities opens up.

Let us look at the simplest things first. The easiest thing in the world to make with a sheet metal bender is something like a bracket. All it is, is a piece of sheet metal with an angle bent into it. You can buy ready made steel brackets for not much money, but they will almost almost be rectangular pieces of sheet metal, bent into right-angled shapes, and perhaps you want something else? If you make it yourself, you can have any shape of metal bent into any angle. How about an hourglass-shaped bracket with a 30 degree angle? If that is what you really need, then you could easily make it – and drill holes for nails or screws where you want them – not where some manufacturer thinks they should be situated. Speaking of brackets – can you see how a right angle bracket could just as easily be used as a tool rack? You could drill holes in it that accommodate your collection of screwdrivers and then screw it to the wall in your workshop.

If you wanted to take things further, you could make something like shelves with only a few bends. Make a few sketches and figure out how you could make a strong shelf from only one or two pieces of sheet metal, that are bent to compliment and support each other. It would be easy to make wall-hanging shelves or even free-standing ones if you wanted to. These are just a couple of ideas to get you started – you will soon get the hang of it and think of more yourself.
