Last week I was able to watch a talent show on TV. There was a lot of goofing around during the show from contestants and the hosts as well. You could really see that they were not taking themselves very seriously and that they did not have a lot of talent anyway. I was about to switch the channel to something that was a lot more interesting and serious when a new contestant walked on stage. I thought that he was just another goofball. He was a tall middle aged man who looked somber and reserved, but with the way that the show was going on so far, I was half expecting him to break into some silly dance or sing horribly.
I could have never been more wrong in my life. He took out a violin from a case and started playing. At first he was a little shy and reserved but as he warmed and really get into the music he started playing like a haunted man. “Wow,” I thought, ” I wish I could play like that”. He wowed everyone including me but what I discovered later on that astounded me the most.
He won hands down. His closest rival for the throne for that day was a clown who could not get one laugh from anyone. Then when he was interviewed he was asked how long has he been playing the violin, and he answered three. Three! That means that the man started playing when he was middle aged already. He said that he was studying on his own and with the help of a new technology one could achieve what was impossible a few years ago has now become a reality.
I became excited since I have always wanted to learn violin even when I was a child. Now it seems that I could actually study on my own with some specialized tools. While learning violin is not an easy undertaking, it has become a lot easier now to learn with the aid of technology. I immediately set myself on researching and checking ways of studying violin on my own and there were a lot of different ways that I could do that. I set about on my own program.
While that contestant on the talent show did not win any other prize after that, he really gave me a valuable lesson. Because of what I have learned from him I am now on my way of fulfilling my childhood dream of becoming a musician.
