Why You Need a High Credit Score

Most people agree that it’s much more difficult to qualify for loans with competitive interest rates today than in the past. Banks are simply a lot more selective than they were just a few years ago. And so it’s very important to understand the options out there and which ones are available to you based on your credit score.

The recent economic turndown affected not only the United States but nearly every country around the globe. So today, a good credit score has become a necessity in just about every walk of life. When lines of credit were easy to obtain a credit score of 700 was enough to get you some of the best terms and interest rates. Today, you need a high credit score of 740 or more to obtain the same benefits. Times have changed.

On the other hand, if you have a low credit score – something in the 600’s, especially the low 600’s – you’ll find it very difficult to get credit in any form from banks or lenders. When you can find a loan with a low credit score like that you’ll probably have to pay extremely high interest rates for the privilege. You may also have to satisfy other requirements like bringing more money into the deal as a down payment or having a higher level of savings. These can be real deal breakers.

If you are having a problem with your poor credit rating, there are things that you can do to improve it. Mind you, there are no quick fixes; just about everything you can do to restore credit score ratings takes time. You need to begin by making a commitment to absolutely, positively pay your monthly bill on time. This is the single most important thing you can do to improve your credit score rating. Just keep in mind that this will take several months to begin to make a dent in your credit score, so be patient.

There are other things you can do to improve your credit worthiness. Generally speaking, they all take a bit of discipline and some careful planning. But if you can do that, you can turn your current credit score into your best credit score. And that will improve your overall financial situation a great deal.
